Question:

What could help here?

For the past 5 weeks now, I get a very bad cough when I lay down for bed. I did the obvious at first, and took cough medicine before bed, with enough time in between for it to take effect. About 2 1/2 weeks in, my ears plugged and I finally went to the doctor for it. She gave me nasal spray to help release the fluids in my ears, and also wrote me a script for Robitussin with Codeine. It just so happens that my insurance didn't cover the cough medicine, and I couldn't afford it, so I've been taking Nyquil before bed each night. The cough also gets bad when I first get up in the morning and if I get too active through the day.

When I saw my doctor, she said that she didn't think I had an upper respiratory infection.

Is there anything more that I can do at night to keep from coughing so much? I'm losing a lot of sleep, and I don't know what to do.

Any help is much appreciated..

Footnote: (because I know someone will tell me to go to the doctor). As I said, I've already done this, and she pretty much tells me it's nothing..

  7. The best stuff (and my doc agrees) is Mucinex DM. Mucinex is an expectorant for chest congestion and upper respiratory infections. The DM part is a cough suppressant.
