Question:

What could my money buy?

I will be in a position to buy a horse this time next year (finally).

I'm an adult intermediate rider in hunter lessons once a week and would want to enter a few shows a year - maybe 2 or 3.

What type of horse could I buy for $5,000? I will have a budget of up to $10,000, but that needs to include all equipment and supplies.

Any comments/suggestions/experience would be greatly appreciated!

  1. buy a race horse and make some serious dough.

  2. It really depends..with the market the way it is, you could probably get a nice hunter horse that has done a few shows in your budget range.  Check out Equine.com for prices in your area.  You can also do an advanced search and put in specific disciplines and experience levels.

  3. With the sudden drop of horse prices you should be able to get a good horse for that money and depending on your tack and clothign you should spend no more than $4000 on tack/clothing ect.

  4. You should go on petfinder and find a very young horse for only a couple hundreds. It will save you plenty of money in the longrun.

    www.petfinder.org

People think these animals are old at shelters. Sometimes there are full breed animals that were taken there because of abuse of their owners or the breeders don't want them anymore.

  5. adoption is sometimes a good idea.

It can be very hard to find a show horse for the hunters that is $5000, but it wont cost $5,000 for equipment, set aside like $3000 for equipment, that should allow you to get some really nice stuff. I'd say spend between $5000 - 7,500, you could probably find a nice horse for that price. If you are looking to fnd a young horse to train, like a project, then show him, you can get them cheap! Or what you could do now is go to your local livestock/horse auction and buy a horse, keep him for a few months to train and take to a couple schooling shows, then turn around and sell him for a bigger price you got him for, (but the horse industry isn't so great right now). www.dreamhorse.com, is nice to find horses, you can find some reasonably priced hunters on their. Since you aren't looking at doing very many shows (or big shows?) you wouldn't need a horse whos too expensive, it will just take awhile to find one whos suitable to you. Just don't buy a $20k hunter horse whos been on the A-Circuit for years if you dob't plan on A-Circuit.

  6. yeah do $5000 and leave room for a good saddle, possibley a trailer and other tack and care item.

I think you could get a younger green hunter warmblood. Or i think you should go with a more experianced veteran horse that someone has outgrown in skill level or maybe the horse just has platued at a certain height or the horse just cant jump as high as it once could. The horse will be very well seasoned and affordable. You will be able to show it and win. It will be a good transition from only riding once a week and the horse will be more forgiving than a young horse because you are still learning.

I hope you find something that will teach you and help you become more experianced. Once you learn from this horse you should get something young that you can train yourself.

What ever you do don't buy a young green horse. I don't think you will be happy. I know people who have done this and they may have payed $4000 for the horse but the horse needs so much training it is a nightmare.

Just take a trainer with you or more experianced horse person when you are looking so they can help you fairly evaluate the horse. You would be suprised how many people will lie just to sell you a horse especially being a first time buyer.

Get a vet check and i think you will get a good horse for your money with the way the market is.

    Good luck searching.

  7. well  it depends on how tall you are and what breed you want. but $5,000 would probably get you a good horse. for a certain breed or height, you may have to train it some, but not much. im looking for a pony, and my parents are willing to pay $5000 max.
