What could or would disqualify a person from adopting a child? Lets say if a person did drugs two and a half years ago and was on it really bad and then went to rehab for SEVERAL months and recovered COMPLETELY would that prevent them from being able to adopt? Even though they are COMPLETELY clean of drugs now?

  1. In Ontario Canada you need to have 10 years of sobriety under your belt in order to be considered for adoption. They would not consider someone who has been clean for two years.

  2. Not necessarily. International adoption programs often have completely different requirements than domestic programs do....so, I don't know if they would qualify for any of those. However, through foster care it is possible for a former drug addict to adopt. Some states have many rules about chemical dependency and depression. We were required to submit doctors statements saying that we haven't ever been treated for depression. But we were never asked about former drug use. I think it is important to be honest and up front, so they can place the right child with the right family. Most agencies and the state will tell you, upon completion of the homestudy and background check, if they are having any problems with your case or if they feel like you are not a good candidate for adoption. Other things: the inability to pay your bills, not enough room in your house, being unable to to care for a child--b/c of physical, mental, or emotional issues, a history of criminal activity, serious depression, sexual or physical abuse, and not being emotionally, physically, or mentally prepared to care for a child at this point in your life. There are others, but these are the first to come to mind.

  3. Possibly... really depends on what type of adoption you are seeking.

  4. To be able to adopt -

    you must complete a home-study

and your background check needs to come back clean!
