What could teachers do to make High School English class more fun...?

while students are still learning.. i.e. movie and book compariosns, skits, pick your own book. etc... be creative but realistic please

Here are some things I've done with my High School English Classes:

--act out the Shakespeare plays. Kids often fight to get parts ...

-- Shakespearean insults. You can get a list of them from the internet. Give the list to your students. Get them to write them out on construction paper strips, and then read the insults to one another.

--While watching a movie, answer questions as you go along, to keep them focused and not bored of the movie. This really helps.

--Poetry Cafe: where they can read either their own poetry, or that of a poet they like.

-- Do presentations(let them work in pairs): this really gets them into the subject area and promotes active learning.

--Do a poster of whatever they're reading. Sounds simple, but it really allows them to be creative about what they are reading.

-- For storywriting: Bring some props, and divide into groups. Each group gets a set of props, which were found at the scene of  a murder. They then discuss what the props could mean. They then create a round-robin story with it. You could do different variations of this.
