What could the recharger units of the cell phone be used for?

apart from recharging the cell phone of course... Are they of any use once the cell phone is "gone west"?

It depends on the output voltage and current capacity. Most phone chargers are as handy as a 2 legged sheep dog as their power output rating is quite small. If you do find an application for one be aware of the polarity. ie + -.

Not much.  Only certain configurations will physically fit, and aside from that is the electrical consideration.  So finding something else that requires exactly the same electrical charge that fits the physical shape is a long shot at best.
