I'm originaly from Scotland and do not speak any language fluently other than English. I have experience in Logistics Management and will have a BA (Honours) Business Studies when I move.

I'm looking for somewhere it doesnt rain frequently and where it would be possible to find a job in Logistics where I can talk in English for most of the time! I can speak in German at a basic level. IE I can ask directions, I know how to greet people, I can order meals etc, I will be learning more before I move, if I decide to move to Germany!

The place I was thinking of moving to was Hamburg but I'm not sure if thats my best option! I'm just looking for ideas from people that have lived in different parts of Europe

  2. Hm.If not Germany you may want to consider Switzerland (where I have lived for four and a half years). The German part may be easiest as you already speak a little, but you must be aware that they also have their own dialect/language of Swiss German (Schweizerdeutsch). There are many English speaking jobs in Switzerland and lots of expats from the UK, America, Australia and loads of other places (plus most Swiss people speak English if you're desperate). It is an expensive country, but then you can also earn a lot. It's also beautiful here, full of mountains and lakes :D If you want to find out more you could look at the expat forum www.englishforum.ch or a book called Living and Working in Switzerland.

P.S. In terms of weather, where I live we've had up to around 35 degrees this summer but also some miserable days where it's pissed it down.

Yes there are loads of jobs in Switzerland which are only/mainly English speaking (especially for banks, law firms etc. Possibly Google too, have you seen pics of their Zurich office :D) But yes, if you want everyone to speak English and aren't really willing to learn a language, Holland might be your best bet.

  3. Ah, You should give the US a try - Sunny Southern California has no rain :)

Germany does seem to be your best bet, they have the biggest economy in Europe and their holiday/vacation leave is great. German does not seem as hard a language to master if one speaks English as English is heavily influenced by German and if surrounded by the language, you can't help but pick it up. That said, most Germans I know speak pretty good English. Not all, but many. I think you could get by with a little and learn as you go.

Give learning the language a go - you can use the Rosetta stone training course - it will widen your options and appeal as a hire.

  4. I wouldn't have thought the weather in Germany would be much better than the UK.   I would have suggested The Netherlands where everyone I have ever met speaks better English than the English - but it rains quite a lot there, too.

If you move to Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal - where you will get better weather, I doubt you will find a job where you can manage with only English.   But you could try the big multi-nationals, ExxonMobil or Shell and see how you get on.   Some US based companies require their staff to use English as a working language all over the world.   (Yes, I know Shell is not a US company).   I think you're asking quite a lot, frankly!!

  5. I agree with the first poster

  6. Austria Switzerland

    Sweden...the choices are endless.
