  1. "burg" is a German word meaning city.  Last names were often city names (i.e. John from Chicago = John Chicago).

Someone said "Hungarian", but Hungarian is relatively close to German, so "burg" may be common there.  Likewise, Dutch, Sweedish and even Norwegian have similarities.  German is also spoken in Austria, Switzerland, etc.

My ancestors hail from the German / Swiss border.  Some lived on each side.  Mind you, back then, there wasn't a well defined border (maybe on a map somewhere, but the people who lived there didn't own maps).  You may have lived in Germany, but the nearest town was actually in Switzerland.  You may have mistakenly thought you were Swiss.  It has been difficult to track down, partly because it's not always clear exactly where they lived, but just as importantly, they may not have actually known for a fact which country they lived in.

  2. In 1900, two brothers (with this name) lived in Pennsylvania.. and were both born in Sweden.  There were others, who were born in the US. Other census records show your spelling of the name, but that it was in NY state in the early 1800s.  It is always possible that at least some of these are not the original spelling (which is also true for your own family).

In other words.. there is no indication that the name comes from only one place.  The accurate way is to locate your ancestors, using the census or other records, and find where the immigrant ancestor actually came from.

    EDIT

RE MR SALA'S POST.. THERE IS NOTHING ETHICAL IN POSTERS WHO BLATANTLY VIOLATE YAHOO BY PROHIBITED BUSINESS SOLICITING.

  3. Steanburg is probably a variant spelling of Steinberg

    Steinberg

    Last name origins & meanings:

German, Jewish (Ashkenazic), and Swedish (of German origin): habitational name from any of the many places named Steinberg, from Old High German stein ‘stone’ + berg ‘mountain’, ‘hill’.

Jewish (Ashkenazic): ornamental name composed of German Stein ‘stone’ + Berg ‘mountain’, ‘hill’.

  4. steanburg is a hungarian last name.

anything with "burg" in it is hungarian.
