  1. Well, not sure, in experimental equipment the US has some pretty good ideas, as good as anyone's. Just needs funding to put it in place.

The U.S. has the most efficient freight system.

Advanced passenger rail is somewhat of a tie I think, the Eurostar, the TGV and Japan's bullet trains are about as good as it gets. Germany has some short sections of mag-lev trains but I think those systems are too expensive to be in widespread use in the foreseeable future.

  2. Japan I think   Don't know what they are called

  3. The French have the fastest passenger services, the Japanese are very advanced but there is probably less high speed service overall.  The French recently set another world speed record.  Look for SNCF and Shinkansen on the net.

Magnetic levitation trains in my opinion are a boondoggle - a glorious waste of money and engineering talent.

The important business of railways is freight and it would be difficult to choose a leader here.  Most countries like the USA, Australia, Germany, France etc use similar systems in train control, locomotives, loading, track and so forth.

The Chinese are going for advanced systems but recently had as many as 3000 steam locomotives still running.

In Australia the Queensland system is the largest and most advanced narrow-gauge (3' 6") system in the world.  See "Queensland rail"  Also in Australia the Victorian system is probably the most advanced broad gauge (5' 3") system.

Curiously a tourist railway in Austria had two brand new steam locomotives built about 14 years ago.  Using "advanced" designs the two little locos are cheaper to run than their Diesel rail car, are more powerful, attract more customers, carry more passengers and produce less pollution.  Start up time in the mornings is 15 minutes.  See the DLM website.

  4. In what way 'advanced'

Italy is making tilting trains for the UK.

The Japanese and UK are working on some exiting technology for HST2.

Largest and longest- the US or Austraila?

The Swiss and French are building most of the trains for Europe, which include some very advanced electronics.

China has the only remaining working 'maglev' after the UK replaced theirs with a rope hauled system.

The technology involved in building the China - Tibet railway in very advanced indeed.

  5. Hmm, interesting question. German trains aren't half bad!

[edit] Japan's "Shinkansen" (Bullet Trains) are ridiculously advanced, but some of the more mundane trains on the local routes are actually old bone-shakers!

  6. China - which has a working high speed Maglev

  7. Your question is arguable and debatable...

    Japan?

    France?

    According to this...

    http://www.photopassjapan.com/densha/

"Convenient and fast with the looks and services of an airport, Tokyo, and Japan in general probably has the most advanced rail system in the world."

Now, as far as "the most advanced trains"?....

again, Japan with it's "Bullet Train".

"Japan is adding environmental awareness and a bit more comfort in the latest version of its celebrated bullet train which comes into service in July and is able to reach a top speed of 300 kilometers per hour (185 miles per hour)."

BUT then, you have France's TGV Atlantique...

...which has the remarkable 320mph (515km/h) speed record, which is the world record for a conventional train, and travels at up to 186 mph (300km/h) in commercial use, since 1989, making it the first train ever to achieve the 300km/h mark in commercial use.

    Today's Irrelevant FACTOID:

Almost every country in the world has a railroad, one of our most important means of transportation. Laid end-to-end, the tracks of the world's railroads would stretch three times the distance from the earth to the moon (750,000 miles). Only ships carry heavier cargoes for longer distances. Only airplanes transport the public faster than railroads.

  8. If you mean by 'advanced' using the most modern technology and the fastest, it's China. Right now it has the longest Mag-Lev operating train that uses magnetic levitation. You can find out more at http://www.gluckman.com/Maglev.html

  9. I think its japan is it not, apparently they have the fastest and safest trains so i guess that counts as most advanced!
