According to many British people, American's are very rude, loud and obnoxious as tourists.

Every country has its schmuks.  

Somebody recently did a survey.  The Chinese were the worst mainly because they don't have a culture that is as polite to women as in the west.  The Germans were #2.  The Americans were #11.  The Japanese were #21.  

When I have asked tour leaders, hosts and others I have consistently been told that the Germans are often the toughest to make happy.

I think that Americans have a bad rep because we are out there in large numbers.  We don't stay home.

The big cities in Europe (Paris, London, Madrid, Rome) when American college students are visiting (bonus: American church groups to Rome and Israel are not always rude, but TOTALLY annoying).
