  1. Sounds Irish

  2. I've looked at a couple of different sources.

The passenger lists from the Port of New York (pre-Ellis Island) shows one family of four coming to the US from Ireland in 1865.

Other lists from the Port of New York after 1900 show a handful of people from Ireland. Ellis Island itself only has passenger records of one American man who re-entered the country a couple of times. They do have a few records for the alternate spelling "Gaulden".

The Port of Boston has 3 Irish women with that name entering the US between 1873 and 1921.

There were 66 people with that surname listed on the 1850 census. A handful listed Ireland as their homeland, but most were born in the US. So the name has been in the US much longer than most of the major immigration pushes.

The name is back in Colonial times in the US. So it gives us a few clues. There are a couple of sites where people who have been researching the name are sharing information. They may be able to help you trace your own line:

  3. Hi. I do a lot of family origin research. Run "Gauldin family origins" through your yahoo or google search engine and you will find that it is a family root of uncertain origin. However you will also find that it come from the United Kingdom, and some of its search derivatives are intertwined with the surnames "Golden" and "Goodwin." If you want to go further, follow the leads from articles the search engine comes up with. Put a continuous alert for "Gauldin" in your google account (Manage your search feature.)
