  1. Well ... my wild guess would be that the Netherlands is the originating country for the Dutch language.

They speak it on several Caribbean islands, too, I believe - islands that used to be part of the Dutch colonies.

A derivative of Dutch, Afrikaans, is spoken in South Africa.

    Hope that helps!

  2. Netherlands.

Dutch is actually an evolved form of Deutsch, which is German for German.  And the country, Germany, is Deutschland in Deutsch.

Dutch, in fact, is VERY close to German, it is a dialect, meaning that speakers of the two languages can pretty well understand each other, but not produce in the other language, without lessons.

Another variation of Dutch, just btw, is Flemish, spoken in Belgium, which used to be called Flanders...hence the name.  Flemish and Dutch are mutually understandable, but I can't remember if a German can understand Flemish.

  3. The word Dutch is the English word for things from the Netherlands, like the language, the people and so on.

The language is also spoken in Belgium.

The Netherlands and the Flanders part of Belgium have been one country several times in the past, either under Spain or an other big country, or as a country in its one right.

Other places where they speak Dutch are the places that are or used to be part of the country, (as colonies) like Suriname and the Dutch Antilles.

Afrikaans, one of the languages in South Africa is closely related and comes (partly) from the Dutch of the people who lived there in the past.

In Dutch this would be a silly question, we from "Nederland" (the Netherlands) call our language Nederlands, the people from the Dutch speaking part of Belgium call their area Vlaanderen and their language Vlaams.

  4. Hi !

You already seem to know where it originated from as you put your question in the correct section namely "The Netherlands". :-))

Other anwerers gave you the additional infoto your question "Where else is it spoken in the World? ".

    Have a nice day.

  5. The Dutch language got bits of German/French/English language in it... we use words like via in the Netherlands.

When your Dutch, you're from Holland/The Netherlands.

When you Speak (part-) Dutch you can live in several countrys:

The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany (near Holland), Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao (ABC-islands), Indonesia, South-Africa (they speak old Dutch, difficult to understand!).

the USA is split up in 'states', in Holland we got 'provincies', 12!

Groningen, Fryslân, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, Utrecht, Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, Limburg & Flevoland.

Every provincie has got a capital. The capital of Noord-Holland is Haarlem, but the capital of Holland is Amsterdam.(strange, because Amsterdam is in the north of Holland)

In all 12, people speak different Dutch! Mostly you can understand, but like Fryslan (Language: Fries), that's difficult to understand!!

The avenues in New York, is an idear of Holland....! Typically Dutch!
