  1. Nobber

  2. Irish province population:

As you can see Munster and Connacht were the worst affected provinces, County Cork used to have a population of 800,000 people, but today there is only 480,000 people. County Tipperary used to have 450,000 people, but today there is only 150,000.

The famine and subsequent emigration to The New World almost completely decimated the Irish population.

                         1840                               2006

    Ulster

    Munster        2.4m                                1.2m

    Leinster        1.9m                                2.3m

    Connacht       1.5m                                0.5m

  3. All over. But most of them left for America from what was called Queenstown until 1921, and thereafter called Cobh. It's near the city of Cork.

  4. Over a million left from west donegal - the 'Congested Districts - no longer congested mind you!

  5. I wouldnt say one county in paticular. Most irish imigrants left from the west including galway, mayo, clare, kerry etc because they were most isolated at the time of the famine and couldnt benefit from the relative wealth in the dublin area at the time. Most boats bound for america left from Cork. I town called Cobh (pronounced cove) which was called Queenstown at the time.

  6. My ancestors were from Cork and Tipperary.

  7. Mayo, I believe.

  8. The poorest counties..Mayo ..Roscommon.. Donegal..Connemara (Galway)
