I am a junior in high school and I wish to become a veterinarian. What courses are required for Cornell (or any other veterinary college), and what should I major in? Pre-vet? Biology? All answers will be appreciated!

  1. Suggest you go online to Cornell University and look at their online Academic catalog under Veterinary medicine. After you decide on a college and apply, you will assigned an Academic Advisor that will help you pick the classes you need and will ask you about what areas of veterinary medicine you are most interested in.  Do you want to teach, own your own practice, work in research & development?  This will determine what UPPER level classes you will want to take.  Remember, any bachelor degree requires almost 30 hours of core college classes plus your major classes for your degree.  Have fun figuring it all out!  Don't stress.  A lot of Sophomore college students change their mind on their degree at least twice before actual graduation.

  2. The link below will give you lots of information on what is required to get into Vet school.  Pre-Vet is not a major -- just a list of courses that you must take.  You should always do more than the minimum required, so majoring in biology might be a good idea.

Vet school is the single hardest graduate program to get into.  You may want to make sure that you take Pre-Med classes as well, because you might have to settle for medical school as a fall back plan.
