What courses should i take if i want to work with the mentally handicapped?

i really want to work with teenagers and adult with developmental disabilities such as kids with mental retardation, downs syndrome, autism and such. i love working with them there so full of life, and loving. i'm getting ready to start college and thats what i really want to do but i don't know what courses i should take or what i should major in to get to that point. please help if you can. thanks <3

  1. You should look for a degree program in special education.  They will outline the courses you need to take for a degree/ licensure.  Do ask the special education department if they offer a program for the students you wish to work with.  You are looking for a license to serve students with mild to moderate mental retardation.  They will be on what&#039;s called an adapted or functional curriculum  - meaning they aren&#039;t studying what the other 9th graders are studying.   If you post what state you want to work in, I&#039;ll be glad to help you out.  It&#039;s fairly simple... but it does change from state to state.
