What created first, escalator or lift?

It was easier to create a lift, and history has shown us that lifts were used before applied with electricity. Escalators associates with electricity.

Lifts (or elevators) have been in use for hundreds of years in various forms; powered by animals, humans, counterweights, water, and most recently by electric motors & hydraulic pumps. It's only recently that escalators were developed in response to the need to move large crowds out of subways, etc.

The original idea behind the invention of the escalator was to move the stairs at a walking pace, thereby doubling the speed pedestrians would move up or down a flight of stairs. The human response? To stand still and let the motor do all the work, thereby completely nullifying any benefit to electric stairs. Humans are so lazy sometimes...

The lift, or elevator as it exists today was invented by a man named Otis.  Actually, he came up with the elevator braking system, making them safe, for the first time, which created the popularity.

Most seen today are built by the Otis Elevator Company............
