  1. Lightning is caused by the buildup of oppositely charged electrostatics. A tremendous potential difference causes one set of charges to move to the other. Remember that opposites attract.

    Thunder, on the other hand, is caused by lightning itself. Lightning heats nearby air to an estimated 18,000°F. Such massive amounts of heat expand air, which produces the shockwave known commonly as thunder.
