What creature is benjamin on the new little mermaid movie?

Benjamin is that fat green thing with the old purple mermaid.

The one odd character in the movie is Marina's sidekick, Benjamin (voiced by Jeff Bennett). He almost looks like he's related to Barney. I don't know what he is supposed to be.

Edit:  After much searching on the web, I found ONE little sentence that read: Benjamin is a "much-put-upon manatee manservant."
