  1. 'star' symbol is to classify properties (hotel). Each country is entitled to classify their hotels and there is no universal scoring system regarding this. In France, they are using crown/ diamond system, while most countries in the world are using stars. In some countries, there is a designated body that are chosen to classify this hotel, where most countries don't.

In Australia, the AAA is the only association that has the right to determine the hotel stars. Normally, it is based on the cleanliness, size facilities, and service that the hotel provides. For example, 24 hours room service, gym and swimming pool are essential for hotel if they are targetting to get a '5 star' accreditation in australia.

Again, as I said, it varies from different country. But normally the general/basic idea of the star are pretty much the same.

  2. The STAR Rating System in Australia is operated by AAA Tourism, the national tourism body of the Australian Auto Clubs.

The ratings shown are generated by this body & are a reflection of the properties standard & faciliites

    5 Stars

International standard with a high degree of facilities: outstanding appointments, furnishings and décor and an extensive range of first class guest services. A number and variety of room styles and/or suites, choice of dining facilities, 24 hour room service, housekeeping, valet parking, porterage and concierge services.

    4 Stars

Exceptionally well appointed with a high level of facilities: quality furnishings and a high degree of comfort, presentation and guest services provided.

    3 Stars

Well appointed with a comfortable standard of accommodation: above average furnishings and floor coverings.

    2 Stars

Moderate with comfortable furnishings and facilities.minded.

  3. The stars given to a hotel can be misleading. In Europe it is generally indicative of the price, level of luxury and possibly service and some minimum level of facilities such dining facilities, fitness facilities. In South East Asia, it is just facilities i.e if the hotel has more than 3 restaurants , a bar and a swimming pool it nearly always qualifies for 5star but the standard of these facilities may be quite inferior to(and cheaper than) other 5 star establishments in the same city. In the USA, it is probably more equitably rated while in India it is a con to charge you the most outrageous prices for average accomodation such as the taj hotels in chennai
