  1. we had 4 farthings to one penny.

    12 pennies to a shilling.

    4 thre-penny bits to a shilling

    2 sixpences to a shilling

    20 shillings to a pound.

    a 10 shilling note-120 pennies.

we also had a florin-2bob/shilling piece worth 24 pennies-and a half crown worth 30 pennies.

    totalling a pound 240 pennies.

we then got screwed-and the great british public `accepted` it-we now have only 100 pennies a pound.

what you could do with a pound!!

these are monetary amounts from when i can remember-as a youngun of 12ish-in 1950ish.

so in the 1930`s-not so much of it about but same values monetarially.

  2. British Pounds Sterling has been used since 1860's

The Bank of England was formed in 1694, followed by the Bank of Scotland a year later. Both began to issue paper money, with the issues of the Bank of England gaining greater importance after 1707[citation needed]. During the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, Bank of England notes were legal tender and their value floated relative to gold. The Bank also issued silver tokens to alleviate the shortage of silver coins.

  11. Pound,  Half Crown (Two Shilling and sixpence), Florin (Two shillings), Shilling, Sixpence, Penny, Halfpenny and Farthing (Quarter penny).

240 Pence (Pennies) to the Pound.

    20 Shillings to the Pound.

    12 Pence to the Shilling.

    etc.,

In those days even the Penny had some value!

  12. I don't know what the dates are but at some point we went from precious metal backed money (insured By = amounts of gold or silver)

to federal reserve notes (they can print what they think in right for there specific agenda)

oh england... in the 1930s they used Indian servents as money. or was it pound sterling

  13. Wow, there are some stupid answers already.

Buddy is right- pounds, shillings and pence up until decimalisation in 1971.  There were also two other coins being the florin worth two shillings and the crown worth 5 shillings.

There were twenty shillings to the pound and twelve pence to the shilling, and thus 240 pence to the pound.

  14. L.S.D.

    Pounds, Shillings and  Pence.

    240 Pennies to the pound.

    20 Shillings to the pound.

    12 pennies to the shilling.

It made no sense at all.

A bit like feet and inches.

The decimal system is much better.

  15. we used the same as now

back then instead of copper pennys they were made out of what nickels are made of

  16. Same as now, but with different dates and designs.  However, bartering was also a bigger thing then too.  No money? You could trade work or goods.

  17. In which country?

  18. Any particular country?

  19. .....money.....that is all

  20. If the U.K. is the country,then in the 1930's there was,I believe,a £10 pound note(although I never saw one),a £5 pound note, a £1 note and a ten shilling note.

Coinage was Half Crown =2s/6d: Florin(two shilling coin) One shilling coin: sixpenny coin: Threepenny coin: One Penny coin:Halfpenny coin and a Farthing coin.

    2 farthings= 1 halfpenny

    2 halfpennies = 1 Penny

    12 pennies = 1 shilling

    20 shillings = 1pound

There were still in circulation, some Guinea coins =£1- 1shilling but these were being phased out.
