The balboa is the currency of Panama. Its ISO 4217 code is PAB. It is named in honour of the Spanish explorer/conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The balboa is subdivided into 100 centésimos.

The balboa replaced the Colombian peso in 1904 following the country's independence. The balboa has been tied to the U.S. dollar (which is legal tender in Panama) at an exchange rate of 1:1 since its introduction and has always circulated alongside dollars.

The Dollar or the Balboa..

Panama does not have paper money, so we use the Dollar in bills...when it comes to coins you have two choices..the US coins and the balboa coins..Now, the Balboas are the same exact value as the dollar coins, same color, same material same size, same value but different faces....For example...in a quarter you have a us president, in a panamanian quarter you have Vasco Nunez de Balboa...But it is the same you can pay with either...

It is so the same that if you bring one of the panamanian coins to the US and you put them in a coke machine, it will take it...lol

The Panamanian balboa (B) = 100 centesimos. The official paper currency is the U.S. dollar, which is accepted everywhere at the rate of B1 = US$1.

Denominations

Coins: B1 and B10; 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 centesimos.

The centesimos coins are of identical size, denomination, and metal as U.S. coins, and the coins of both nations are used here interchangeably.

Traveler's Checks and Credit Cards

If you have U.S. dollars or U.S. dollar-denomination traveler's checks, then there is no need to exchange currency. Unlike most other parts of Central and South America, it is relatively easy to exchange other major currencies also, due to the extensive offshore banking business in Panama. Traveler's checks and currency can be exchanged at banks, exchange shops, and hotels, as well as international airports. Larger banks may offer the best exchange rates, but avoid black marketers at all cost. Consult your bank about current exchange rates before departure. Keep all receipts for reconversion. Banks do not cash personal checks.

Most currencies can also be exchanged, but try to take only crisp and new notes, as wrinkled and soiled notes are likely to be refused.

Credit Cards

American Express and Visa are the most commonly used credit cards; Diners Club and MasterCard are also easily accepted in most upmarket places in the cities, but smaller restaurants and shops may ask for cash. Some banks in the capital offer cash advances on credit cards, but make sure you bring your passport.

They use US dollar/balboa.  Basically all your paper money is US and the coins you receive may either be balboa or US (but they are worth the same amount).

Don't bother getting traveler's cheques.  They aren't widely accepted and a pain to exchange.  

You can always use an ATM.  Bantismo (a local bank)is owned by HSBC (a US bank), but your ATM card should work in any ATM that has the cirrus logo.

THe currency is the US dollar, but technically they call it the Balboa.

They make their own coins that are the same size (but different designs) as compared to the US coins. They do not make their own paper money (or too little to be often seen).

When buying someting in Panama one usually gets change as a combination of US and Panamanian coins.

While US Dollars can be easily spent in most central American Countries, only for El Salvador and Panama are they the official currency of the country.

The "Balboa"  is the Panamaniam Curreny, that is 1 to 1 with the USdollar. Due to the nature of trade in Panama and the US administration of the Canal until Dic 31st of 1999.

Vasco Núñez de Balboa (1475–January 15, 1519) was a Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador. He travelled to the New World in 1500 and after some explorations settled on the island of Hispaniola. He founded the settlement of Santa María la Antigua del Darién in present-day Panama in 1510, the first permanent European settlement on the mainland of the Americas (a settlement by Alonso de Ojeda at San Sebastián de Urabá the previous year had already been abandoned). He crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, becoming the first European to lead an expedition known to have seen or reached the Pacific from the New World
