I have a very light brown room (don't know the exact color) and the couches are a dark sage green. Right now I have Maroun and beige check soft shades (don't know the correct name of those either) What color window treatments would look good?

  1. I would use a dark shimmery copper.  It sounds like your colors are muted and I would add some punch to the room with a little shimmer.  Maybe a silk panel that has a little shine to it, depending on how formal the room is.  Red is the complement to green so I think a brown that leans towards red would be a good choice (hence the copper suggestion.)  Good luck!

  2. i would use a very lite shade of green

  3. Consider the 'visual' weight of the couches.  If they're dark, they're 'heavy.'  The walls, being light brown, are 'light.'  Visual balance can be achieved by using the same color 'weight' in the draperies as that on the couches.

For instance, repeating the dark sage green in draperies would be effective, but it may be a little too predictable (if not boring), overall.  If the soft shades are functional and you like them, perhaps maroon draperies would work better in the space.

Try to develop a color 'scheme' vs. thinking in terms of matching or coordinating.  Here's another example: you decide on plum draperies, take the soft shades down, then introduce throw pillows with a plum, sage, and cream pattern.

There's a lot you can do.  See what inspires you.
