Question:

What damage to my car/tires should I have looked at?

Today I was driving and a car attempted to get into my lane (with me there). I was driving the freeway speed limit, and I swerved to another lane to avoid being hit. I entered a skid, slammed on my breaks and ended up in a 360 spin. Luckily I did not hit the median or any other cars. Of course the guy who almost hit me was completely clueless and sped off into the sunset. My question is, what concerns should I have about my tires and car. Should I have certain things looked at?

  1. You should have no problems, just drive the vehicle and see how it feels and drive and if anything does not feel right just have your local tire shop inspect them and good driving.

  2. Check to make sure your tires are not going flat and the rims are not damaged.  If the car still handles as it did before the lane change this will be your main concern.

Next time try not to lock your brakes and turning your steering wheel so hard, and you will not lose control so bad.  If it is raining you may not be able to stop the spin.

  3. If you did not come in contact with a curb or other object,  and you notice no handling problems, I would not worry. You may have flat spotted the tires a bit, but this is not going to be a problem with normal tires. (It would be an issue on a Nextel Cup car, but you are not driving one of those)

What worries me more is your failure to control your vehicle in an emergency situation. If you start to skid, you need to pump the brakes (if they are not anti-lock) and steer your wheel in the direction you want the car to go.  By locking up the brakes, you had no control and were lucky that no one was hurt!

  4. Most likely nothing is wrong as long as you didnt hit anything. But since you did skid have the tire shop look for flat spots in the tires.  You can always have a saftey check at most any garage for free or low cost. Let them know what happened and your concerns.

  5. All of the above:-)

I don't know how severe the braking and skidding was but you may want to have the tires/wheels balanced again just to be on the safe side. Upset balance may lead to excessive irregular wear.
