Question:

What dance style should I learn?

I want to take dancing up as a light hobbie. I don't want to do it seriously, just something I can do once a week to get some excersize and enjoy myself. I want to learn to do routines like groups do in music videos like girls aloud and sugarbabes etc.

I used to do line dancing when I was younger which was ok but as it was only a small church group (that also had some older people in) the routines couldn't be too hard or tiring, so I never got out of breath or anything. Saying that, I'm a little overweight so nothing too strenuous.

I don't know what this kind of dance style is called (where it's like routines that pop acts do in their videos) so I would like to know what you think I should look at and if you have any videos then that would be great too!

  1. Hip Hop and ballet(:

it may sound lame but trust me theese will be great to learn

  2. Hip Hop. Hip Hop has so many different types of dancing. It can be really calm, or it can be up beat and exciting. It's a great style to learn. And maybe learn about the culture behind it.

  3. jazz! i do it and love it!

  4. How about jazz/funk. I take that, its upbeat and sorta like hiphop but you still get the basic dance steps. Like turns, and leaps. Its fun, if you dont like that, then try regular jazz or hiphop.

  5. i think you should join jazz its a real big work out and has nice music all funkiysh!! http://youtube.com/watch?v=kz96rf9F20I

  6. jazz dancing is really kewl and u dance to all the new songs just out, so much fun and is not intense like many other dance styles!!

  7. Do hip hop for sure. I started doing that since i was 7 and i love it. If you're at like a dance at school or a party, hip hop dancing doesnt make you look like you cant dance. Jazz is fine too but i think some songs are just too slow for dancing.

    Hope this helps

  8. i would try jazz or hip-hop.

  9. i would take hip hop because its hot right now

  10. Popping is not the same thing as Hip-Hop.  Hip-Hop encomasses a whole array of styles...such as Popping, Locking, Krumping, etc.  It is a lot of fun.

If you want to do something at your house, try some bellydancing.  There are a bunch of great dvd's out there, and they use a lot of muscles you don't normally access.  Mix it up and throw in some Latin.  You can get dvd's on the cheap at half.com, or see if your library has some to borrow, even Netflix and Blockbuster carry some.

    Have fun!!!

  11. I think you should do jazz..because it teaches you all the technique you should know and is amazingly fun...i pormise...plus there are different types of jazz you know....and when it comes to what other people say about you...ignore it....they are so jealous...lol...so dance your heart out and do what you love

  12. Ya hip hop is probably what you're looking for. But there could be other types of dancing you'd want also. Good Luck and Enjoy!

  13. I would try jazz or aerobic dance...which is basically dance for the exercise. You don't have to be very flexible or anything.

These days people are doing a lot of hip-hop...but that can tiring and it's fast.

  14. Learn latin styles; they're fun and fast-paced. Merengue, tango, salsa, reggae, cumbia...

  15. jazz is really fun and upbeat, its a great exercise too.

you'll never be bored with it, and usually the songs that go along with the dance rountine are really good.

  16. i would do hip hop. it is a lot of fun and it is a good work out

  17. Hip-hop and Jazz dance classes are usually focused mainly on having fun. Both are great workouts, and you can practice at home too.

Go to youtube and search "Jazz routine" or "Hip-hop routine" and you should find what you're looking for.

You could also try Ballroom dancing although it is not what you see in most music videos. Check out what dance classes are near you! Most studios allow you to sit in and watch a class to see if you like it or not.

Good luck! Just remember to have fun.

  18. Jazz or hip-hop sounds like it would be the best for you. They are both fun and energetic. If you want it as a hobby, go to a recreational studio and not a professional/competitive one.

  19. Since you stated you are interested in dancing similar to what is in music videos you definitely want to find a Hip Hop class.  The YMCA near me offers hip hop so that is one place I would suggest to look.  There are also lots of studios that offer group hip hop classes.  I'm sure you'll find a beginner class in your area.

  20. hip hop comes in many different styles and genres. the stuff they do in videos is what you would take in classes anyways (most anyways)

But i would recommend jazz it has a little it of everything you have our ballet techniques(no pointe work) but you have many eathy and almost hip hop like moves. your body must move to the ryhthm and feeling the music is importnat . but it isn't definitely full hip hop.

I really hope it goes well i love dancing before you know it you will be perfroming and getting very fit and you won't be able to get away form it once you start. my only regret is i didn't start sooner!!!!!!

  21. I think you mean hip hop though I take jazz and really enjoy it

  22. ballet it's the best it's a great workout and it's fun=^..^=

  23. I say hip-hop

  24. hip hop sounds cool.  even though everyone is doing it.  i don't dance but by the looks of it hip hop looks very versitile and really can reflect your creative side more then other styles, where as to like other styles you just already have a set picture in your head but when i picture hip hop i see all kinds of movements well i talk to much ill shut up hahaha

  25. probably jazz it is slowish and fun and uses mordern pop music. that isnt to strenuous. However, neither is ballet. even thou pop music isnt used it is not strenuous fun and can help you in all areas of life

    have fun

    day=)

  26. Okay, so I major in Theatre at my school, and we did a semester of Hip Hop. It was so amazing, and it is a super good exercise routine. The dance moves that they use are kind of like a big mix of all the dance styles around. So I would say Hip Hop.

That's mostly what people in Music Videos do. It's like the amazing generic brand of dancing!!

    harlee

  27. hip hop *****

  28. Start with ballet. It really builds up muscle in your legs and makes you so strong. If you start with ballet you can do tap, jazz, and hip hop. But you have to be advance. You could really lose weight. if you have passion you can do it!!!!

And i bet you can. ;-)

  29. My sister and I loved doing this. You can try MTV The Grind  dance videos. Old but still good. Even Paula Abdul and other celebrities have great dance videos. Carmen Electra has one as well. Just go to any website that sells videos like amazon.com or bestbuy.com. Go check out your local Walmart or Target.

    Amazon Hip Hop Dance Videos

  30. I break dance. You should too. A lot of people like b-girls.

  31. start out with ballet...its the foundation of every dance style..so do like a year of ballet and then do whatever dance style appeals to you the most and you shouldnt have a problem

i think after that youd enjoy maybe modern or hip hop those are the dance forms tht really let you move the way you want but ballet for a little first cuz itll help you out majorly!! for the reason i mentioned earlier
