I have my passport but my friendhasn't yet applied for his. We are supposed to leave from L.A. to Puerto Rico Oct. 26th. But we board a cruize ship going to five separate nation/republics. I think it is Sept 20th that we will need passports but, with all the changes, do not know for sure.

  1. As early as Jan of 2008, but as late as June 2009.  The government is also looking into a passcard for travel to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Canada that would be significantly cheaper.

  2. You will need it NOW. We just cruised to the caribbean on June 3 and we needed our passports to board, and at the end of the trip for customs. Birth certificates were NOT accepted. Apply asap.

  3. Charlie is correct.

Get a Passport. It is the best form of ID available.

The cruise lines like it and it makes everyone's job easier.

  4. January 01,2008 I just had my passprt renewed and it took 3 months for a renewal. I believe it's taking longer for a new one.

  5. To travel by sea, you technically do not need a passort until Jan. 2008.  But, many cruise lines require passengers to have passports.  So, first, call the cruise line or travel agent to be sure.  Then, if passports are required, your friend can quickly put in his application.  The state dept is currently waiving the passport requirement for people who have APPLIED and have their application RECEIPT...and FOLLOW the instructions on the state dept website!! So , this is great news...just go to the website below for all passport application inf, to print out the forms, and to read about the "flexibility' they are now offering.  hope it  all works out well for you .
