  1. First of all St Peter's Square forms part of The Vatican.  The Pope will for sure be in Rome over Christmas - however you would need to find out if he is going to be there when you are planning to be.  The website below may help you.  I would use a travel agency to book your hotel and they would also be able to advise you when he would be performing his usual blessings.

You seriously need to buy a guide book - but the site below may be a good start!

Have fun it's a great great city!

  2. Check with the Vatican itself.  The Pope usually holds general audiences every Wednesday when he is at the Holy See.  He can also be seen Sundays in the window of his private apartment on Sundays when he is not traveling.  He presides at St Peters for special occasions but not always.

  3. We went to Rome in September, we stayed just outside Rome in Ostia Antica in the walls of a castle, it was very, very easy to get into central Rome on the train and we were made very welcome. The restaurants in the village were very good and cheaper than eating in the city.

My Tips? if you want to go to the vatican, get up very, very early, aim to be in the queue by 8.30am at the latest. We got there later than this and the queueing time was approx 3-4 hours so we decided not to join it. Avoid the day when it is free to enter.

The Termini station area is not really very nice and we did feel uncomfortable round there but some of the hotels did look really good - I believe this is where most of the budget hotels are. I think if you are canny and be wise about what you carry you should be OK.

Don't have your picture taken with the romans outside the colloseum until you have agreed on a price (we got ripped of for 20 euros here)

Go to the churches. I am not really very religious but some of the churches are awe-inspiring.

I added a link to the vatican, there may be some information on 'audiences with the pope'.

Have a good trip! Your mum will love it, we want to go again!

  4. Wednesday You should ask the priest of your church for an invitation to see the Pope.

  5. In addition to the advice given, if you are Catholic then contact your parish priest or diocesan office and tell them you are going to the Vatican. They will be able to give you additional advice.

    With love in Christ.

  6. you need pass in advance, contact your parish for instructions

  7. della conciliazione Rome, very central to vatican and good price, papal audience on wednesdays, go to www.santasusanna.org for more info on pope

  8. sunday - angelus at noon - st peters square - bring binoculars

wednesday - audience at 10.30 - room off to the left of st peters square - make sure you get tickets beforehand, but dont pay for them, they are free

  9. sunday and wednesday
