What defines a first generation college student?

I have aunts and cousins who have gone to college, but my mom only went to a trade school and my dad didn't pursue further education after high school. Do I qualify?

[please provide sources if possible]

Thanks!

  1. First generation means that you are the first in your immediate family, meaning your parents.

  2. Unless there is some sort of scholarship riding on this, or some special admissions program, it shouldn't matter.

  3. I've only heard about this for scholarships, and yes it means your mom and dad only, but I wouldn't mention your aunts/cousins just to be safe unless they specifically ask. Well your cousins don't even matter, because they are in your generation.
