I am currently majoring in Mechanical Engineering and wanted to know if this degree would help you get into NASA or Boeing. What elese would you need to get into one of these companies or do you need a diffrent engineering major and what should your emphasis be. Do you need really good grades or does it depend on your work experience and people you know?

  1. You may want to consider other companies that are involved in the space program, as well.  For example, United Space Alliance (USA) has the primary operations contract for the shuttle program.  That means that they handle almost everything from mission planning to launching the shuttle to making repairs and upgrades.  I guess the point I'm making is that a broader goal would open up more options as far as companies you can aspire toward.

As far as your degree goes, I received my BSME last year and, while I don't work directly on the space shuttle, I can peek over my cubicle wall and see both shuttle pads and the VAB.

  2. Yes, mechanical engineering is a good choice.  Try to get an emphasis in aeronautics, or you may even be able to fluidly switch to a degree in aeronautical engineering which may have a slight edge over an ME, depending on exactly what you'd like to do at either NASA or Boeing.  You will certainly need good grades, a very related internship, and contacts are never a bad thing.

Don't be afraid either of gaining field experience in another company while applying.

  3. A mechanical engineering degree is fine and people with bachelors degrees are hired as well.  With a degree in ME you could do work in structural design, thermal analysis, structural analysis, loads & dynamics, as well as several other areas that are not directly tied to ME.

NASA has been very supportive of assisting employees in working on graduate degrees.  But, if you already have a graduate degree it will give you a leg up on other candidates.

As with any other company, work experience (i.e. summer programs, internships, co-op program) in the field will also give you an advantage when compared to other applicants.  Plus, it will give you an idea of what area you might want to specialize.
