  1. What type of NGO work are you looking for?  Do you want to get into more of a medical field, cultural, languages, or research?  These are the four prominent categories that people fall into when looking for a job with an NGO.  For medical, obviously biology, chemistry, or epidemiology and pre-med would be very helpfull.  This would lead you to an organization like Doctors W/O Borders, etc.  Cultural, you have all kinds of degrees:  political science, history, religion, international studies, international affairs, there are a ton.  These would be helpful in understanding patterns of behavior and customs within a particular culture, especially since most NGOs go to developing nations with many cultural factions.  Languages is pretty obvious, you could work as an interpreter.  Research, you could get a degree in political science, psychology, sociology, anthropology, many of the social sciences.  This would be more field research, finding some social or political issue or problem and then finding solutions, etc.

NGOs typically look for someone who first has experience.  You will have to at least do one internship (more than likely unpaid) at an NGO before they will even think of considering highering you.  You will probably need an advanced degree if you want a job that is actually substantial, like an M.A. or more.  Obviously, Oxford is your best bet in the UK.  Its tough, but I have many friends that went and said that its the best (dont know how biased they were).  Good luck.
