  1. Well, depending on the school, you can major in either Meteorology or Atmospheric Science.  Generally, the programs are very similar, some Universities just feel Atmospheric Science is a more prestigious sounding degree and covers a broader subject matter.  Many agencies looking for researchers in weather often also consider candidates from other physical sciences, such as Physics.  But you can't go wrong with a degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences...just keep in mind that for research, most areas will require a Masters degree at a minimum.  With a Bachelor's degree you will most likely be qualified only for forecasting positions, which do not typically pay well, unless you are in the energy market.

The best programs for Meteorology or Atmospheric Science include:

    Penn State

    Oklahoma

    Florida State

    Wisconsin

    University of Washington

    Colorado State

Many other universities are becoming more competitive though, so you may also look into schools like:

    Ohio State

    NC State

    Millersville (PA)

    Plymouth State (NH)

    Lyndonville State (VT)

    Rutgers

    Colorado State

    Miami

    Texas A&M

Several of the SUNY branches (i.e. Albany, Brockport, Stony Brook)

There are many other programs, but these are some of the more well-know programs.
