What detergent do I use? Or is there a better way?

I use to live in a city with very hard water. When I washed my clothes, even the sweaty ones, they came out clean and did not hold in the sweat. I live in a city now with very soft water(no water softner system), and my clothes do not seem to get clean. It has this weird odor still left on some of the clothes. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am lost.

get a box of water softener and add a cup to your wash

or add a cup of vinegar
