  1. Well, you've got separate questions there. What determines what gear you get starts with what you want to do with it, and how much you are willing to spend. Then, factor in, can you find some really great deals on good equipment.

For brands, there Yamaha, Denon, Harmon Kardon, Onkyo and Pioneer for receivers. For speakers, I am partial to Infinity (I have a five speaker setup of their Beta series of speakers, which, if you can still find then - Vanns & BPAV are two good bets on stock and price - are great choices. Theres also Polk Audio, and JBL.

amazon.com has a good selection of equipment, and their information online and the reviews of the products are quite helpful.

I'm not a big fan of top premium cables, at least for speakers. As long as you use good quality 16 gauge you're fine. Where you want a really good cable is in the HD video connections. HDMI if possible.

  2. Budget, research, listening with a few favorite CDs or DVDs (if for home theater), preferably ones that you know well, and that will exercise the speakers.

First, read a few home theater or audiophile magazines and look for reviews.  Do further research on http://avsforum.com and/or other online resources.  Then find a local store where the top contenders are sold, and spend some time listening to your source material.

I like B&W speakers and Velodyne subwoofers for home theater, and Denon receivers.

  3. Price and audition.

You decided what the brands are by reading reviews.

Then you take a favorite CD and perhaps a favorite DVD to the store and hear how they sound.

  4. Speakers are speakers. Most of them sound good. I'm a bit old fashoned. I have always had the big honkin' speakers that take up 50 square feet of living room and are a piece of furniture. The new "satellite" set up's are pretty weak. Remember the old Cerwin-Vega D15e's? 2-15 inch subwoofers and balls. The Onkyo 850 watt amp and Monster Cable that could rope a calf if it needed to.

I used to airbush art on my rig to set it apart. Kept the speakers long after and made a coffee table out of them.

Go old school and get some big mothers. I don't know why I am telling you this. I looked up Bad *** Audio and you have killer specs for your stuff. Looking forward to the artwork on 'em too! Good luck guy's.
