  1. the net result of two opposing forces:

    1) the attraction of the pigment to the solvent traveling up the plate

    vs.

    2) the attraction of the pigment to the stationary phase on the plate

    the less it is attracted to the plate, and more to the mobile solvent, the faster & thus further the pigment moves
