  1. The material selects the crystal structure with the lowest energy configuration dependant on stoichiometry, bond angles, cation:anion size ratio, etc.

    The 3 basic lattices adopted are

    Face centred cubic (FCC)

    Hexagonal close packed (HCP)

    Body centred cubic (BCC)

    Look up the structures in wikipedia.org

    (this is basically the theory)
