I have a great dane pitt bull mix and he's SUPER strong. He get sooo excited when i tell him he's going to the beach, he pulls me over when i try and walk him there. i've tried a harness - he can pull me over, a choke chain - he chokes himself AND pulls me over, and i don't know what else to try!

Can sombody even point me to some tips on how to walk a strong dog? We pass the neighbors house who has about 5 dogs, and he barks and whines and pulls me to their fence. I just can't control him - and he NEEDS his exercise!

Thanks in adavance...>Serious answers only please!

  1. a collar and leash work. But you would have to show the dog your the boss... if he tries to pull you sit down and dont let him win... but dont brake its neck either!

STAY AWAY FROM SHOCK COLLARS AND CHOKE CHAINS! THEY ONLY HURT THE DOG AND ITS EMUNE SYSTEM!

  2. 2 people walking him at the same time and holding on tightly.lol.my husky is over 100lbs and not as tall as ur dane but he can pull and does the same thing to me by tugging me to where ever he wants to go. he is really strong and with huskys they are pullers. i got him a heavey husky harness that helps me control him by pulling it up on his back to try to hold him back.with ur dane ur best bet is to try to train him to heal and sit while u are out walking him. go a few steps then stop and make him sit and stay,do this over and over until he learns the routine.it will take time since he sounds pretty hyped up when he knows he is going out. i got my husky harness at the pet store and it is more costly than other ones but it does work well along with the commands.with strong dogs u have to make them listen or like me u will be able to scratch ur ankles with out bending over lol. good luck and start training right away.

  3. A halti

Choke chains work, if they are used right....Where is the chain when you walk him?

close to his chest or under his ears?

ADD: Electronic collars are supposed to be a tool of last resort for Off-Leash training and behavior modification.

  5. Yikes. Okay, well, if you've got a little bit of extra cash, investing in a training class would definitely be worthwhile. And, as much as I hate to suggest this, if you're really desperate you could try an electrical color to give him a tiny shock whenever he tugs. I don't like them at all, but it might work. Also, when you take him outside for a walk keep some doggy biscuits on you, or maybe even his favorite toy. Try and distract him with those, and reward him with a biscuit if he doesn't pull.

If none of my suggestions work...definitely try an obedience class.

  6. Sounds like he really needs some training.

Try walking him in the back yard with treats; get him to heel - then treat. Walk, then get him to sit - then treat. Get someone to act as a distraction (have his favorite toy, or something he loves), but get him to stay - then treat. After a few times round the yard, move on to the park, and soon you should be able to have more control over him on your walks.

  7. they have types called gentle leaders and head halters that are used on dogs that pull.

  8. Gentle leaders are your answer I have 4 large pitbulls and understand your dilemma. Gentle leaders look like horse halters and they first time you put one on he will buck and fuss like a horse but once you get it on and start walking him and he settles in you will be amazed with the results. The best part is that it does not hurt him or you and your walks will become a joy for him and you. I would also recommend some positive reinforcement training to teach him to pay attention to you and leave other distractions like barking dogs alone. If able you should give obedience class a try.  good luck
