Like his father, Harry, Skip wouldn't mind a little levity, so here's another answer: He died from exposure.  Specifically, 33 seasons of exposure to the Atlanta Braves.

Skip Carey had been battling health problems for over 2 years that led to his untimely death.As a Braves fan,I got to enjoy hearing him call the games dating back to the 80's when the Braves sucked.He was to  us like his dad was to the Cub fans.He deserves respect as he truly earned it,and for those smart#%?@*^ with the wise cracks,your not a true sports fan.
