According to Wikipaedia and swedish newspapers Carl Bildt "compared the Russian reasoning behind the attack on Georgia to Adolf Hitler's reasoning for invading much of Central Europe."

What exactly does he mean? What were Hitler's reasonings for invading european countries that paralell the current conflict in Georgia? Was he acting under the guise of protecting german citizens in those other countries?

  2. Thank you for this interesting question.

Several different news wire services have picked up on the Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt's statement. And it's surprising that the quote came in this form: it sounds like something you might hear impromptu at a press conference or in an interview.

There simply are not significant parallels between the current situation in South Ossetia and that of Europe in the late 1930s. To suggest such is worrying. Mr Bildt might have been drawing upon some different parallels in a more general sense:

    - the growing authoritarianism and nationalism in Russia

    - increasingly interventionist Russian foreign policy

    - the rapidly increasing Russian defence budget

The other parallel drawn by Mr Bildt came later in most coverage of his statement. Agence France-Presse carried: "Bildt also evoked the memory of the late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic in addressing Russia's agression against Georgia.

"We did not accept military intervention by Milosevic's Sserbia in other Yugoslav states on the grounds of protecting Serbian passport holders," he said."

This is arguably a more valid historical correlation.

  3. Hitler wanted to unite all his 'perfect' race of aryans. so he began invading...and russia wants their land back so they invaded. thats the simple answer.

  4. Hitler fought to protect his people, while the war happening right now in Georgia is war for oil.

  5. 1.Hitler wanted to Recover Germany from depression and poverty in 1930s

    1. Putin tries to recover from 1990s USSR collapse and etc.

    2. Hitler thought to revenge for unfair treatment of Germany in the world.

    2. Russia thinks the US was unleashed and mistreated Russia during 90s

    3. Hitler nationalistic and aggressive, but enjoys Popularity

    3. Putin's Russia aggressive and undemocratic, but still at least 60% popularity.

4.Hitler believes in Germany's superiority and wants to be superpower.

    4. Russia think they are superior and destined to be a superpower.

    5. Hitler used "protecting German minorities" pretext for Invasion.

    5. Russia uses protecting minorities and "peacekeeping" pretext.

    6. Hitler was appeased by the West

    6. Russia is being appeased by the West.

I look at this list myself, and I wonder, where is this going to lead? It is a very dangerous pattern. People need to wake up !

  6. Poland and Czechoslovakia had signifigant ethnic German minorities. Hitler used the so-called 'persecution' of these groups as part of his cassus belli in invading these countries.
