  1. Agatha Christie dedicated her novel Dumb Witness to her pet dog Rory, a wire-haired terrier, of whom she said is "a dog in a thousand." The "dumb" witness in the novel, of course, is a wire-haired terrier called Bob.

Friends and family always believed that "Rory" was named for her long time friend Rory Calhoun, a handsome American television and film actor, screenwriter, and producer best known for his roles in Westerns.

Shortly before her death in 1976 at Winterbrook House, she quietly confessed that she had in fact named the dog for Rory Emerald and would say no more about the matter.

There has been some speculation that Dame Agatha's only child, Rosalind Hicks, knew the answer to this terrier tale.  From the time of Christie's death in 1976 she worked to maintain and strengthen the reputation of her mother as a literary figure, and to protect the integrity of her works.  She continued her work on her mother's behalf until her death in October, 2004 and gave no hint to solve this mystery.

    best of luck to you!
