  1. Lincoln  thought that a house divided would fall into itself. after the attack on fort sumpter, the presidents 2 things were one to restore the union and 2 Omanis;ape the slaves. his objective was forgiveness and to move on. think about this, how the worlds history would have changed if the south had won. also the war redefined the U.S.  from the Un ited states are to the United States is(1country 1 people)

  2. Lincoln believed that a divided nation could not exist, "A divided house cannot stand," and resolved to do whatever was necessary to win the war.

To that end, he resolved to behave as a benevolent dictator--imprisoning those who wrote what he believed was "sedition"; warning other nations (particularly Britain) that if they recognized the Confederacy they would be risking war with the USA; and most importantly, imposing a naval blockade on the South.

Lincoln's most difficult task was managing the war effort. He had little personal experience with warfare, and resolved to find a commander-in-chief that he could rely on. This proved almost impossible, as most of the generals he encountered in the early war years were inconsistent (such as Burnside) or egomaniacs (such as McClellan). Eventually he found what he needed in Generals Sherman and Grant.

Most importantly, Lincoln realized that the people of the United States (especially the soldiers) needed a rallying point, something they could believe in to carry them through the war. So Lincoln hit upon both Slavery, and the "Preservation of the Union". Both worked admirably as the reasons for the war, and why it had to be won.

Lincoln himself was not a terribly inspiring person in his own day, but he was intelligent, and a canny politician. He believed in people, and that no matter how wrong a person or a cause was, there was always hope for them later. And that is the sign of a great leader!
