  1. 'Glasnost' or 'open-ness' meant that for the first time, public polling would be done in Russia...He actually wanted to know what the people thought.This was a back-handed way of admitting that the Soviet system had failed, and that he needed input from the Russians on how to fix it.

    To gather this data required freedom of speech and expression, simply to allow Russians to express their opinions.

    In the process, much of the media - newspapers, radio stations, Tv - was privatized; became part of the public sector...Unfortunately, Putin later removed much of this media independence.
