Shutting down would not protect a nuclear power plant from a plane or bomb.

A commkon misconception is that there would be a nuclear explosion like an atomic bomb. This is not the case.

If a plant explodes nuclear material is spewed into the air (this is what happened in chernobyl).

Therefore it would make no difference whether it was online or offline, so I'm assuming they carried on running.
