  1. Hamsters dont have a long life span. Two or three years is about all there is. You have no way of knowing what age it was before you got it. The other things that you describe are normal. All animals get stiff when they die and the black stuff is normal too. Sorry for your loss.

  2. Maybe the poor little guy had digestive problems. Or he ate something that killed him when it tried to go through his body. Sorry for your loss. :(

  3. I am very sorry to hear about your hamster's death. It is always hard for us when our pets die after all the good times we have had with them.

Hamsters are very hardy animals and hardly show symptoms when they are sick.

If he had been playing well till the very end, then he must have died a natural death. It is very difficult to guess the cause of death - it could have been something as simple as falling down from his wheel (which is something you cannot control) to more complicated sickness which might not have been visible in his body or behavior.

Was his p**p watery for a few days before death? In that case the hamster could have had a deadly bacterial infection called Wet Tail which is a common cause of death in hamsters. If you think he might have had wet tail, you may have to follow extra precautions to prevent any other hamsters in the house from getting it, and you need to thoroughly disinfect the cage and everything in it if you plan to put another hamster in the same cage.

Time is great healer and you will slowly get over your sadness and remember only the good times you had with your lovely hamster.

  4. MOST LIKELY IT ATE SOME OF IT'S BEDDING, AND THE BEDDING GOT STUCK. THE BEDDING PROBABLY RIPPED OPEN THE HAMSTER'S INTESTINES WHILE IT WAS IN THE HAMSTER. SO SORRY TO HEAR THAT IT DIED, BUT GET ANOTHER ONE WHEN YOU FEEL YOU ARE READY.

  5. wettail maybe

  6. How old was your hamster?  They only live for about 1000 days or 2 1/2 years.  When animals die, the muscles that control the bodily functions no longer work, so most likely that's why there was "black stuff".  Sorry to hear that he died.
