What did my ex mean?

*I'm asking in this section for an older crowd and more experience

My ex told my best friend that "he doesn't stay friends with his ex's because sometimes it's just too awkward." But then after that he said "But I bet it will be different at school because I will run into her all day so yea..." But he has said that he doesn't want to get back with me.

He has had ex's at school that he still ignored, why is he saying it'll be different? What does this mean?

It means he knows you put your friend up to pumping him for information.  And he knows she's going to repeat to you everything he said, so he made certain to say something that would play with your mind.

He's playing head games.  His words mean NOTHING and he doesn't want you back.  Move on with your life and ignore him at school.  If you can't ignore him, be polite but don't be friends.  There are plenty of other guys watching, and I'll bet there's at least one who's been waiting for you to smarten up and ditch this ex.

i wouldnt think another thing about it. he said he didnt want to get back with you, that should be that.
