  1. the same things some people use today such as leaves, grass, water out of a canteen. the custom of washing ones a**s is long established and in muslim countries it must be done with the left hand since the right hand is used to eat with, the left being unclean. those who have lost the left hand are in deep dodo. pun intended.

If you travel the middle east, it disgusts them to see someone use their left hand for eating.  Frankly it disgusts me that it would disgust them but they have thier reasons as one previous answer suggested.  That is one reason that cutting off the right hand is considered a very serious punishment.  Yuk
