What did people use prior to the sewing machine?

well, i need to answer questions for class and i cant find an answer to this one, so maybe you can help

  1. Prior to the invention of the sewing machine everything was sewn by hand using a good old needle and thread.  All those elaborate gowns worn by kings and queens in those old paintigs...hand sewn -every little detail! Even today true haute couture garments for women and expensive bespoke tailored suits for men are still sewn mostly by hand.

  5. They used needles and thread, of course. If you're thinking of how someone might mass-produce a piece of clothing, that didn't happen until around the Industrial Revolution, after sewing machines.
