Question:

What did the MRI technician mean?

I was getting an MRI this evening for my back when the technician asked me if one of my legs were in pain. I said yes, my left leg. I paused and then asked, "Why? Did something come up?" He said, "Oh, just something to note. The doctor will review in the morning." Well, of course, I'm perplexed. What might it all mean? Who can read the tea leaves?

  1. he may have noticed a misalignment or bulging disc. He is not legally allowed to interpret the results of your MRI so you will have to wait until the Dr reads it before you will get any information

  2. He probably saw something that wasn't just right (slipped disc or pinched something) and wanted to know if you had pain. Just trying to solve the mystery. He is not able to give you any info because he is not your doctor. Don't worry about it, you will find out tomorrow.

  3. Please, we are MRI technologists.  Technician is considered demeaning.  Sorry, but I hadda clarify that.

Now that I got that out, I will tell you that I ask every patient, who has a lumbar spine MRI, if they have pain in the legs or feet, and if so, which side.  My radiologist wants that information.  Sometimes, I forget to ask prior to the scan, so I will ask when the scan is over.

So, it probably does not mean anything.  It is just getting a detailed history for the radiologist.  I hope your back feels better soon.....
