What did the bugs that hang around lights do before electricity came around?

On the vanity fair dvd, in the opening credits (may have been alternate opening, not sure if it was actually used in the final cut) there was a shot of a moth flying around a candle flame, and it caught on fire.  Which sounds really sketchy..and it was kind of, but it was sort of mellow too.  In a pessimistic sort of way.  

Anyway, I expect that, like everyone else said, they would have flown around flames, most of which were probably covered (ex. lanterns.)  But it made me think of that clip.
