Many of them had very advanced civilizations.

There were also 100's of tribes in pre-Columbian America and, since you don't specify what portion of the Americas you need, I chose to start you with the Maya, Aztec and Inca.

It might also be worth noting that Columbus NEVER stepped foot on what is now the United States and Leif Ericsson made it to North America about 500 years BEFORE Columbus.
