What did the key used in Ben Franklin's kite (electricity) experiment open?

Does anyone know the every day purpose of this particular key? House key, desk key, etc? Also, is the key now part of the Smithsonian's extensive Americana collection? If not, what ever became of it?

  1. the door to his his house. he pulled it out of his pocket


  2. It was a skeleton key; used on any door in the house that had a lock.

  3. Since Franklin was supposed to quite the ladies man, maybe it was the key to his Mistress's chastity belt.
