  1. My first degree is in accounting, with honors, from a major state university. I hate the area. I just have that degree because my classmates were fun to study with.

  2. I graduated with two degrees - one in English and one in French.

With English, I loved my professors. I had three professors in particular that changed the way I think about literature, writing, and teaching. I love the critical thinking and interpretation that goes into studying literature. It's a very passionate subject assuming you have the interest for it. Studying English (generally a reference to the study of literature, though you often study writing/grammar too) gave me a deeper appreciation for the English language and even the culture and history of my country (the US).

With French, I loved the culture. One of my requirements was to study abroad - that's about the most worldly and fascinating way to learn I can imagine. I lived with French families and traveled and really got to gain a context of what I was studying. I loved learning the language and how understanding French helped me better understand English (obviously another interest of mine).

Part of what I loved about my majors is that I loved my majors! Going to class was a pleasure, not a burden. I began school as a chemistry major (something I'm good at, but don't find any real joy in) and also tested the waters in business and psychology before surrendering to what I knew I wanted to study all along. I was afraid English and French aren't practical enough. I'm going to teach those subjects soon in public high schools and I'm very excited!

In short (brevity has never been a strength of mine), make sure you pursue what you love because that will bring you more fulfillment and joy than studying something you think is more practical or suitable. Sometimes you have to try a lot of things you don't like in order to find what you do like.
