This is the third year I've raised a garden. I have all kinds of squash (...but I couldn't find butternut seeds this year!), at least 2 varieties of cucumbers, corn (only to shade plants when the August sun beams down hard & merciless...), peppers, collards/mustard greens, sage, green beans, pole beans (planted against a tree - they usually climb the tree well & I can pick beans standing up!), cherry tomatoes (ya know, they resist extremely hot, dry weather well...), and two egg plants.

I started rather late this year but I've got jungle growth! I'm in south central Virginia. Where are you?

  1. I have tomatoes, green peppers, squash, zucchini, rhubarb, ollalieberries (a cross between black and raspberries) yellow beans, lettuce, onions, herbs (I make homemade pizza with them). Everything is doing pretty well this year. Last year the tomato plants grew beautifully but not tomatoes came off (this year i'm getting more thankfully). Last year I also had a whopping bumper crop of zucchini, and big enough to win a blue ribbon at the mid-state fair! (I haven't wanted to eat a zucchini since.) I'm in south central california.

  2. EDITED: When growing the watermelons pick all but the largest off water heavily and fertilize until just about time for them to begin ripening and then water sparingly...they will be bigger and sweeter.  Also pat it on the belly tell it  how much you like it and turn it daily to continue it's fine shape......NOT A JOKE!  I grew one average size is 30 pounds mine weighed 52.........they neighbors were in awe!  (Charleston Grey)

PS Our weather is determined by what the other states send to us we have none of our own LoL! Central in the US

Bunch/bush beans, Okra, Watermelon ( 2 varieties) Cantaloupe (Hales Best) Potatoes, Onions, Garlic, Cucumbers, Zucchini and Butternut squash, Red and Green sweet peppers, Tomatoes (2 varieties) Artichokes, Rhubarb,

3 varieties of lettuce...1 of which is 14 variety mix blend, Strawberries...Also planted dwarf fruit trees Granny Smith and Fuji apples, Red and Bartlet Pears and Nectarines.

We planted what we like to eat...With food prices continuing to rise all of this could off set the food bill.

Suggestion for excess Please donate to food banks and senior citizen centers......I'm a lucky 70 year old I'm still able to garden and contribute.

  3. Everything I planted is taking off like crazy.  I'm in the Northeast near NYC and I have cucumbers, LOTS of tomatoes, squash, bell peppers, sweet banana peppers and bush beans.  All my plants are producing much better than last year most likely due to the fact that I used organic compost this year.
